Belgian composer Tom Soetaert, aka neo-classical artist OUTER, returns with the intimate new single ‘In Limbo’, released January 16th via AWAL. The track precedes his highly anticipated album Glowing Mountains in the Sky, due February 13th.
OUTER has built a reputation for cinematic, emotive soundscapes that blend muted electronics with neo-classical instrumentation. His work has garnered support on national radio and coverage across the music press, establishing him as a composer who bridges contemporary classical and alternative-electronic genres.
‘In Limbo’ continues this signature approach. Written during the expectancy of Soetaert’s first child, the track captures both euphoria and profound uncertainty. Rich piano and string arrangements are layered with reverb-drenched choral vocals and muted electronics, providing a soft, pillowy backdrop for OUTER’s delicate, whispery singing. Critics and fans may hear echoes of Sigur Rós and Ólafur Arnalds in its expansive textures.
Speaking about the single, Soetaert explains, “In Limbo is probably the most personal track from the upcoming album. Written during the expectancy of a first child, it captures the euphoria but also fear and profound uncertainty of watching your identity shift while stepping into an unknown future. A contrast that is mirrored in the music and lyrics. Dreamy pianos, strings, and ethereal vocal lines melt into darker synths and beats. A play of light and shadow, reinforcing the album's main themes.
The artwork is based on a polaroid portrait. The camera was broken, so my face is very blurry and almost disappearing. Exactly how I felt at the time writing the song.”
The single’s artwork reflects this period of uncertainty: a polaroid portrait with a broken camera rendered Soetaert’s face blurred and almost disappearing, mirroring the emotions behind the track.
Glowing Mountains in the Sky promises to showcase some of OUTER’s most expansive and emotionally resonant work yet. Composed largely in remote locations across Iceland, Norway, and the Czech Republic, the album incorporates field recordings from these environments into its textures. The result is a cinematic fusion of modern classical, chamber pop, and alternative rock, with ambient and shoegaze influences. Dynamic compositions emphasize piano, texture, and atmosphere, conjuring melancholic landscapes that echo the places in which the music was conceived.
