Nanseera has called the track’s mood apocalyptic yet hopeful, and that tension runs right through it. Acoustic guitar, dobro, banjo, upright bass and drums build a sound that’s stripped back but never small, the kind of arrangement that lets every lyric land. She’s cited Rhiannon Giddens, Jesse Welles, Gillian Welch, Allison Russell and Joy Oladokun as touchstones, and it shows in the way ‘Poison Rain’ balances craft with conviction.
The song came together fast. After weeks of trying to write about the ruling without success, Nanseera sat alone at the Song Suffragettes House on Music Row and finally let it pour out in one sitting. She recorded it soon after across three sessions in a friend’s home studio, the quickest turnaround of any release in her catalogue so far.
