Sam Stokes builds a whole world around 'The Tale of Gaia'

LA artist Sam Stokes approaches 'The Tale of Gaia' with the kind of ambition that only works when the emotional core is strong enough to hold everything together. Across its nine tracks, she moves through innocence, grief, forgiveness, resilience and renewal, shaping the album as a loose spiritual journey through what it means to be human.

The title-track sets that scope early, treating the Earth as part of the story itself. From there, ‘Lay on Grass’ brings a lighter, more playful energy, celebrating physical presence and the simple joy of disconnecting from the noise around you.

That brightness gives ‘Green Beans’ more weight when it arrives. The song marks a darker turn, reflecting on pain and the shock of recognising how much suffering exists in the world. But rather than staying there, she answers with ‘I’ll Still Hold Up’, a psych-rock surge that brings defiance and momentum back into the record.

The middle stretch keeps the album from becoming too solemn. ‘Dinosaur Bones & Petrified Wood’ is loose, silly and deliberately freeing, while ‘He Forgave Me Again’ shifts the emotional focus towards the experience of being shown grace by someone else. That theme of release carries naturally into ‘Just Lovely’, where strings and piano create one of the record’s gentlest moments.

By the time ‘We’re All The Same’ arrives, the album has widened again, moving towards community and shared experience with a Beatles-influenced warmth. ‘Like a Feather’ then closes the record with its biggest gesture, tying together the album’s recurring ideas of connection, consciousness and renewal.

Four years in the making, 'The Tale of Gaia' feels considered without sounding overworked. The mix of Plaid Dog sessions and outside collaborations gives each track its own shape, while her writing keeps the wider arc intact.

Expansive, heartfelt and often beautifully eccentric, 'The Tale of Gaia' is a record about losing your place in the world and slowly finding it again.
