Sandy Martin makes power sound lonely on her hypnotic new single ‘Ice Candy’

Sandy Martin’s latest single ‘Ice Candy’ imagines a figure who appears to have everything: limitless power, complete freedom and an entire universe to move through. Yet none of it solves the one thing she cannot control; the absence of love.
But instead of treating its central character as a distant fantasy figure, she makes her loneliness feel intimate. The scale is enormous, but the feeling underneath it is simple and recognisable. ‘Ice Candy’ is ultimately about the strange emptiness that can remain even when everything else seems abundant.
Her voice has a close, almost conversational quality that sits against the wider, more dreamlike atmosphere of the track. There's a hypnotic pull to the way the melody unfolds, with the production creating enough space for the song to feel immersive without losing sight of its emotional centre.
Written with Tim Phoenix, ‘Ice Candy’ feels carefully shaped. It doesn't need to dramatise every detail of its world because the strongest idea is that immense strength can still coexist with vulnerability.
Hypnotic, imaginative and emotionally clear, ‘Ice Candy’ shows Sandy Martin at her best when she allows a huge idea to reveal something very human underneath.
