On their long-awaited debut EP 'Pillars', San Diego's Signal-23 present a release that feels deliberate and carefully constructed. The EP moves within the darker edges of contemporary electronica, drawing on the influence of artists like Moderat and Jon Hopkins, while maintaining a distinct focus on subtle progression and tonal balance.

The production is grounded in a hardware-led approach. Modular synthesisers, drum machines, and analogue equipment give the record a tangible, slightly imperfect character, where texture plays as significant a role as melody. There’s a noticeable emphasis on space as elements are introduced gradually, often repeating and evolving in small increments. This creates a sense of continuity across the EP, even as individual tracks explore different rhythmic and emotional territories.

Low-end frequencies are used with restraint but purpose, anchoring the compositions without overwhelming them. Percussion tends toward the hypnotic, building patterns that feel steady and controlled. In contrast, the melodic elements, often originating from a modified Omnichord, bring a softer, more reflective quality, particularly in the EP’s quieter passages.

Structurally, 'Pillars' avoids clear peaks and resolutions. It operates through gradual accumulation and release, allowing tension to form and dissipate in a more understated way. This approach aligns with the duo’s broader conceptual framework, where sound is treated as a system of interacting parts.

There is also a subtle thematic undercurrent running throughout the EP. The intersection of technical and human perspectives manifests in the balance between precision and emotional weight. The music doesn’t lean heavily into either side, but sits between them, allowing both to coexist.

As a debut collection, 'Pillars' feels cohesive and intentional. It prioritises consistency and atmosphere over immediacy, offering a listening experience that rewards attention for those willing to listen closely enough.
