Singer-songwriter Steve Stinson transforms heartbreak, personal upheaval and years of searching for purpose into his debut album, ‘Cocoon’, a nine-track collection blending blues, folk and Americana with deeply personal storytelling.

Exploring the idea that life's most difficult experiences can become catalysts for positive change, Cocoon traces Stinson's journey through broken relationships, career uncertainty and international moves, examining how unexpected setbacks can ultimately reshape our understanding of happiness and fulfilment.

The album's central message emerged from a defining moment in Stinson's life. While pursuing a promising career outside music, he made the decision to leave his job and relocate to Europe for a relationship. However, when the relationship ended before the move could take place, he found himself returning to work and questioning the direction his life was heading.

That experience became the inspiration behind the album's title track, ‘Cocoon’, which transforms personal heartbreak into a broader reflection on resilience, perspective and the possibility of finding something positive within difficult circumstances.

“Everybody's got to start somewhere,” Stinson explains. “But ultimately, I think it really just starts with a change of perspective.”

The theme of transformation continues throughout the record, with previously released single ‘Does Anyone Else’ exploring Stinson's growing dissatisfaction with prioritising career progression over personal fulfilment.

Meanwhile, ‘Evergreen’ reflects on the one passion that remained constant throughout the changes in his life: music.

On ‘Fly Away’, Stinson turns his attention towards his experiences living abroad, drawing inspiration from his move from the United States to Australia and the years of travel that followed.

“It’s about discovering that home isn’t always a place,” he explains. “Sometimes it’s the person you become along the way.”

Alongside tracks including ‘Always On My Mind’, ‘Lost In The Tide’, ‘Make You Move’, ‘New Reality’ and ‘The Ledger’, the album builds a portrait of an artist navigating the uncertainty of adulthood while gradually discovering a clearer sense of identity and purpose.

Born in Stillwater, Oklahoma, raised between the United States and Australia, and now based in Papua New Guinea, Stinson's international upbringing and experiences have played a significant role in shaping his songwriting.

Musically, Cocoon draws from the storytelling traditions of Bob Dylan and Fleetwood Mac, alongside the emotional piano-led songwriting of The Fray and the atmospheric influences of Coldplay. Early exposure to country and blues through his father also informs the album's warm, roots-inspired sound.

For Stinson, however, releasing his debut album represents more than the culmination of years spent writing and recording music. It is also a personal commitment to pursuing the creative ambitions that have remained with him throughout his life.

“I hope that the record achieves what its theme is, that hard work and consistency pay off in the long run,” he says. “Making music is fun, but it isn't easy or cheap either. There's some sacrifice that comes with it, and for me this is the first step.”

He continues: “I hope that listeners find a new sound that they like. Something new is always nice. But I also hope that it hits home somewhere for them in a way that aligns with the themes of the album.”

With Cocoon, Steve Stinson delivers a debut shaped by the experiences that challenged his expectations and ultimately changed his perspective. Rather than presenting personal transformation as a straightforward journey, the album embraces the uncertainty, sacrifice and self-discovery that come with finding a new direction in life.
