Sungaze are one of the most exciting bands on the underground scene right now. A relentless release schedule has paved the way for a string of enticing teaser singles to build the tension of their now-released self-titled studio effort. Having made their debut with Light In All Of It in 2019, Sungaze promises to be one of the group's most dynamic efforts to date.
Comprised of core duo Ian Hilvert and Ivory Snow, Sungaze has been one of the most emphatic bands of this year. The ten-track kicks off with the alt-folk ballad ‘Time is on the Wind’. Building its sonic foundation from a simple guitar and vocal, it's not before long that its ethereal shoegaze-y feel folds out onto the airwaves.
The album features a healthy mix of sounds and perspectives featuring five lighter tracks and five cathartic, darker tracks. Sungaze’s versatility in the studio is highlighted by this mesmerising effort - feeling constantly engaging and invigorating, never mismatched. Tracks such as ‘Daisy in the Wind’ and ‘So Light’ pave the way for the group's pop sentimentality. Despite having their alternative edge, they are not ones to shy away from a quick, catchy hook or an intoxicating melody to reinforce their boundary-pushing reputation.
The band explains, “We like to think of this album as a “coming of age” album. The songs are more personal and direct than we’ve written in the past, and each track on this album details pretty major life themes that have been present for us in the past few years. And as is often displayed in coming of age stories, there was an element of soul-searching and a level of self-acceptance that needed to happen in order for this album to even exist at all.”
