Surface Detail return with prog metal single ‘This Lantern’

Scottish progressive metal band Surface Detail have released 'This Lantern', offering another preview of their forthcoming album due this autumn.

Built around an unusual 7/8 rhythm, the track combines off-kilter grooves, dissonant guitar work and heavier rhythmic sections with a more theatrical approach to songwriting. Guest vocals from High Voltage frontman Robbie Horn add another dimension to the arrangement.

The song was developed after guitarist Adam Anderson and drummer Andrew Carus began experimenting with new ideas following an Opeth concert, shortly after completing the band’s 'At Best, Outnumbered' EP.

Lyrically, 'This Lantern' is written from the perspective of an object providing warmth and guidance before eventually being abandoned once it is no longer needed.

The single also connects to a broader narrative being developed around Surface Detail’s next album, with teaser videos introducing clues involving a dystopian setting, recurring symbols and a mysterious “winter challenge.”
