There’s a sense, from the very first moments of Thunderbird Lodge, that The Flavor That Kills aren’t interested in easing the listener in. Instead, the Madison collective lean fully into disorientation by crafting a record that feels like a fractured narrative unfolding in real time.

Building on the foundations laid by their previous work, this latest release expands both sonically and conceptually. Where earlier material hinted at experimentation, 'Thunderbird Lodge' commits to it entirely. The result is a dense, often uneasy blend of rock, psychedelia, and electronic textures that constantly shifts beneath your feet. There are shades of Ween’s unpredictability and the abrasive edge of Butthole Surfers, but the band push these influences into something more narratively driven throughout.

Central to the album is its overarching storyline, following a character caught in a recursive, collapsing reality. It’s a concept that could easily overwhelm the music, but instead it seeps into the textures and structures of the record. Tracks like 'Evaporate' and 'Swimming in a Paradox' mutate as they play, with ideas emerging, dissolving, and reappearing in altered forms. This fluidity reinforces the album’s thematic core, where identity and perception are constantly in flux.

Sonically, the record thrives on contrast. Gritty, guitar-driven passages collide with synthesiser-heavy expanses, while rhythm sections oscillate between tight control and near-chaotic release. There’s a rawness to the production that works in the album’s favour, preserving a sense of both immediacy and unpredictability.

But what ultimately defines 'Thunderbird Lodge' is its refusal to offer resolution. It’s an album that leans into discomfort, allowing its darker themes to remain unresolved. There’s no clear sense of closure, just a lingering feeling of unease that persists long after the final track fades.

For a band now several releases deep, this feels like a decisive step forward. 'Thunderbird Lodge' invites us all to step into its world and sit with the uncertainty; an approach that, while demanding, proves quietly compelling.
