The Misty sharpen their "post-surf" identity on lively new single ‘Neverknows’

‘Neverknows’ is the sound of The Misty pushing deliberately away from where they started. The North London band’s latest single arrives as the first clear step towards their second album, due in 2027, and it finds them leaning harder into the self-coined “post-surf” sound that has become central to their identity. Sixties harmonies, psychedelic detail and surf-inflected guitars are still present, but here they are pushed forward by a more restless indie-rock energy.

Originally conceived as a hazy folk ballad in an alternate tuning, ‘Neverknows’ gradually transformed into something more direct and swaggering. It's a change that can be felt in the final arrangement, which moves with a loose, confident groove before opening into a bluesier middle section.

Lyrically, The Misty balance surreal imagery with something more grounded and distinctly British. The words move quickly, stacking social observations and unusual metaphors on top of one another, which gives the song a slightly chaotic edge without losing its sense of control.

But what works best is the way those elements combine into something coherent. The shimmering harmonies, psychedelia influences, indie swagger and kitchen-sink detail could easily pull in different directions, but ‘Neverknows’ holds together because the band commits fully to the collision.

Following the 2025 debut album 'Poorly Planned Missions... Executed Worse', the single feels like a genuine progression to their mission to date. It's looser, stranger and more stylistically confident, suggesting that The Misty are becoming increasingly comfortable with their own terminology.

If “post-surf” once sounded like a useful description, ‘Neverknows’ makes it feel much closer to a fully formed identity.
