Following the release of his latest single 'All I need is love', Flex caught up with Slovak singer-songwriter Alan Murin to discover what influences his uplifting pop sound. If you enjoy Alan's picks, be sure to check out 'All I need is love' at the end of the article.
1. “Legend” by Drake
If I had to choose five songs that define different chapters of my life, the first one would be “Legend” by Drake. Drake was probably the first artist who truly changed the way I looked at music and life. When I was younger, listening to him made me realize that music could be emotional, cinematic, confident, vulnerable — all at once. “Legend” always felt bigger than just a song to me. It felt like a mindset. I remember listening to it and feeling this weird inner belief that one day I also wanted to build something meaningful through music, something beyond Slovakia, something global. A huge reason why I even started dreaming about making music in English comes from that era. Drake made ambition feel cool but also human at the same time.
2. “Hotel California” by Eagles
The second song would be “Hotel California” by Eagles. This song is deeply connected to my mom. It was always her favorite song, and I grew up hearing it around the house. She always loved the guitars, the atmosphere, the emotion in it, and I remember she used to tell me she wished I’d learn to play it on guitar one day. So now whenever I hear that intro, it instantly takes me back home — childhood memories, family, safety, warmth. As I got older, the song started feeling even deeper because there’s something haunting and timeless about it. It reminds me how music can emotionally freeze moments forever.
3. “Stolen Dance” by Milky Chance
The third song would be “Stolen Dance” by Milky Chance. That song is pure teenage nostalgia for me. I remember me and my friend listening to it nonstop when we were just young teenage kids. Back then we didn’t care about anything serious yet — we were just living in the moment, riding around, hanging out after school, feeling like life was endless. “Stolen Dance” became the soundtrack of that whole era. Whenever I hear it now, I instantly get transported back to being that young guy again, before responsibilities, before pressure, before adulthood fully hits you. It’s one of those songs that carries a whole feeling of youth inside it.
4. Then there’s “Podzemie” by Kontrafakt
Then there’s “Podzemie” by Kontrafakt. This song represents my roots and where I come from. Kontrafakt were my first real idols growing up. Their music shaped an entire generation here, including me. I remember listening to them as a kid and seeing them almost like untouchable legends. Their confidence, authenticity, the way they carried themselves — it influenced me heavily. And the craziest part is that years later, life somehow came full circle and I got the chance to work with people I once admired from a distance. That feeling is hard to describe because it reminds you that dreams you have as a kid can actually become reality if you stay consistent long enough.
5. “Hide My Gun” by Post Malone
And the last one would be “Hide My Gun” by Post Malone. This song is tied to one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life — my best friend’s bachelor trip in America. We did this cowboy-style road trip across the States, and the whole thing felt like a movie. Endless roads, desert landscapes, bars, late-night conversations, freedom, friendship… just pure life happening in front of us. “Hide My Gun” was playing during that trip all the time, so now whenever I hear it, I instantly feel that atmosphere again. But what makes it even more emotional is that later, my friend actually used that same song during his wedding ceremony. So now the song carries two huge moments at once — the wild freedom before marriage and then the emotional moment of stepping into a new chapter of life. Every time I hear it, it feels like memories, friendship, brotherhood, youth, and time passing all wrapped into one song.
