Following the release of his latest single 'Just Hold On', we caught up with American blues-rock artist Brett Benowitz to find out more about what influences his eclectic sound. If you enjoy Brett's picks be sure to check out his latest single 'Just Hold On' at the end of the article.

1. Jeff Buckley "Grace" BBC 1995

"I always come back to this video when I need inspiration and want to be blown away. I love the intro where the host compares him to his dad and he throws up his arms in fake celebration. Just everything in this video is incredible here, his guitar playing, his singing, the raw emotion, the tightness of the band. I love seeing a good raw live performance and this is one the best."

2. The Red Hot Chili Peppers “Californication”

"This is just one of the best music videos ever made and they’re my favorite band of all time. As a video game lover this video is especially awesome to me and being from California and currently living in LA, I love all the California references. Californication is my favorite album and the song was my walk out song for my Bar Mitzvah haha."

3. The White Stripes "Death Letter” Blackpool

"This is such an epic live performance. Like how can two people sound so huge? Jack White is a major influence for me guitar wise. I love his blues licks and the way he solos, his guitar playing is like performance art. And the tone his guitar has in this song is insane. I feel like I would have stank face the entire time if I saw The White Stripes live haha."

4. The Doors “When the Music’s over” Live at The Bowl 1968

"This whole performance is just mesmerizing. There’s nobody like Jim Morrison and the kind of effortless mystique he had. The audience was always just in the palm of his hand. The best is part is at 9:35-9:39 when he belts “we want the world and we want it…” then ducks. So sick. The ultimate rockstar."

5. Moses Sumney Tiny Desk

"I think Moses Sumney is one the greatest musicians out there from the last 5-10 years. This live performance is spellbinding, and I saw him at The Bootlegger in LA a month before the pandemic and I was blown away. His voice is out of this world. And I love his songwriting and creativity."
