Following the release of her latest EP 'Into Hell', we caught up with gothic alternative-rock artist Lucy Mayhem to find out more about what influences her eclectic sound. If you enjoy Lucy's picks be sure to check out 'Into Hell' at the end of the article.
1. Black Veil Brides- Goodbye Agony
"Black Veil Brides is the first band I ever found on my own, and really the first band that got me into music and the scene. I think every person has an artist that they feel has “saved their lives” in the sense that that artist’s music has helped them get through dark times, feel understood, etc. For me, that artist is Black Veil Brides. This song in particular was one of the 1st songs I ever found by them, and truly the song that made me become a lifelong fan, and made me want to make music as well. "
2. Juliet Simms- Found Missing
"Juliet Simms, (now known as Lilith Czar), was the first female rock artist I discovered on my own. My discovery of her was closely followed by my discovery of Black Veil Brides due to the relationship between herself and the lead singer of Black Veil Brides. This song in particular was where I discovered my love for acoustic, stripped back music, and really deepened my understanding of what it means to be an artist and a songwriter. If I remember correctly, the second I discovered this song was the second I started writing my own songs."
3. The Pretty Reckless- Just Tonight
"The Pretty Reckless is one of those bands that I wish I had found much sooner than I did. I only discovered them during 2020, but the second I found them I was instantly hooked. For me, Taylor Momsen was the first female singer I heard that had a relatively deeper voice, similar to mine. In the same breath, she also looked exactly like what I wanted to look like personally, and as an artist. This song was the first song I ever heard by them, and the first music video I ever saw by them. I think when you look at photo shoots I've done, how I dress, and even do my makeup, it’s pretty clear I pull a ton of inspiration, visually, from Taylor Momsen / The Pretty Reckless, and this specific music video even."
4. Bad Omens- Limits
"Similarly to The Pretty Reckless, Bad Omens is another one of those bands I wish I had found sooner. Again part of my 2020 music discovery, Bad Omens, and this song, became one of my top 5 bands and top 5 favorite songs. The way Noah Sebatian produces, and the imagery he uses when writing really intrigues me and resonates with me. Almost to the level that Black Veil Brides, or Juliet Simms did/do. This song especially really helped me, and in effect changed how I write songs. More and more I try to write with specific imagery/themes in mind, and a big inspiration for that is this song."
5. Green Day- Boulevard of Broken Dreams
"Green Day was, what I would consider, one of my first introductions, if not the first, to rock music. I have vivid memories as a kid going to / from soccer games/ practices and my dad turning on Green Day’s “American Idiot” and other songs by them on the radio. As a little kid I claimed to hate them, because I didn’t want to admit I liked what my dad did, but secretly I quite enjoyed their music as a 6 year old. As I’ve gotten older, they’ve really become quite nostalgic for me, and Boulevard of Broken Dreams has really become an important song and influence for me."
