Following the release of their latest single 'please', Flex caught up with London shoegaze band sadplanet to discover what influences their alternative blend of shoegaze, dream-pop, and indie rock. If you enjoy sadplaent's picks, be sure to check out 'please' at the end of the article.
1. Dinosaur Jr - Little Furry Things - AIDEN KNOWLES (GUITAR)
My favourite song by one of my favourite albums of all time, and I feel like this record is the perfect portrayal of their iconic sound. I love how chaotic and fuzzy it sounds. Has a lot of charm and it’s a song I can play on repeat all day long.
2. Cheatahs - Geographic - DAN LAWRENCE (BASS)
Cheatahs were one of my first shoegaze discoveries when I was a teenager. Their whole debut is a really great listen, but Geographic has always stood out to me. After a few listens, there were a few features which stood out: its opening lead sequence, rising further than you’d expect to create harmonic ambiguity; the unusual phrasing, made up of uneven blocks, broken up by fills in unexpected places; the weird pairing of the pre-chorus and chorus, sounding unrelated, but passing the energy from one to the other. This live version also has a slightly better bass tone than the recorded version in my opinion.
3. La Dispute - Woman (in Mirror) - JEFF BAKER (DRUMS)
La Dispute are one of my all time greats and have lifted me through some pretty terrible moments in my life - there are too many songs that I love from each record so it was very hard to pick but I can’t stop coming back to this. Jordan’s poetic lyricism is usually so poignant and delivered in quite a confronting way across their discography but I love the contrast of a different type of delivery here - so delicate and vulnerable, and the drum groove is one of my favourites on the record.
4. Big Thief - Heavy Bend - KYRA HO (VOCALS)
I love it because it’s so interesting. I love the mix of the crunchy beat and staticky noises with the acoustic guitar and how simple but catchy the guitar line is. I think the lyrics are insane and I have no idea what it’s about but you can see all the images so clearly. It’s such a fun and strange song that’s also so easy to listen to and such a unique song only Big Thief could do.
5. Ultravox - Vienna - NICK RAINEY (GUITAR)
I remember listening to this with my mum in the car and always remember her pointing out the stereo pan of the percussion, this stuck with me and is something that influences me now. Plus, who doesn’t love 80s cheese?
