Following the release of her latest single Withdrawals (One Night Stand) we caught up with Canadian tropical-pop fusion artist Shannon Kohl to find out what inspires her eclectic sound. If you enjoy Shannon's picks be sure to check out her latest single at the end of the article.
1. Aaliyah - Rock the Boat
"Aaliyah is one of my favourite artists to sing along with. Her voice is so soothing and feminine. I love the tropical-sounding music paired with her vocals. The video brings a great sense of serenity, featuring crystal Caribbean waters. All-female group choreography on the front of a boat is iconic!"
2. Lana Del Rey - Venice Bitch
"Probably my most favourite driving song! The way the music picks up and gets weird in the second half is trippy, boasting the sounds of instruments I don’t recognize. I like the elegant blend of outerspace-like sounds and Lana’s soft, gentle singing."
3. Sza - Good Days
"Beautiful nature sounds and gentle guitar plucking. Very relatable lyrics about not being able to get someone off your mind, but reminding yourself that good days exist and are coming, if you focus on that. The video is truly magical, showing a fairytale-like mushroom world and graceful pole dancing."
4. Erykah Badu - Didn’t Cha Know
"A very peaceful-feeling song with humble lyrics. “I’m trying to decide which way to go I think I made a wrong turn back there somewhere” is a line almost all people can relate to. I could listen to Erykah Badu everyday!"
5. Natalie Merchant- Kind & Generous
"This song exudes pure positivity. All lyrics are an outward expression of gratitude and appreciation. When I hear “Kind & Generous” it immediately makes me think of all the things that I am thankful for.”
