Following the release of his latest single 'Knock My Door' we caught up with Canadian Hip-Hop/ Afro-Fusion artist Taigenz to find out what influences his eclectic sound. If you enjoy Taigenz picks be sure to check out 'Knock My Door' at the end of the article.
1. 50 Cent - Ghetto Qu'ran
"As a life long 50 fan, this to me is probably one of his best written songs from his entire catalog. This came out much earlier in his career (pre- Get Rich or Die Tryin') and word on the street is that this was the one that ultimately got him shot 9 times. The story telling and the honesty in the chorus is something I feel many of us can relate to when we are striving to be successful. "Lord forgive me, for I have sinned, over and over again, just to stay on top"."
2. Michael Jackson - I Wanna Be Where You Are
"I came across this song...THANKS TO 50 CENT who remixed it shortly after MJ's passing. I became hooked on it, and got to appreciate a 12 year old Michael Jackson singing his young heart out. This is something that always gets my mood up when I'm feeling low, or it amplifies my mood when I'm already feeling way up."
3. Alicia Keys - Troubles
"This song got me through one of the heaviest moments of my life. From the piano, to her voice and ultimately the lyrics, I was able to feel reassured that dark and tough moments are just that...moments. I can let go of my troubles and I'll eventually find my way out of the hole."
4. Nas - Trust
"This song became one of my favorite Nas tracks shortly after a breakup. Especially when it comes to the 3rd verse. Trying to build yourself up, and do what others think is unimaginable, you sacrifice other parts of your life for your dreams. I put much of my romantic life on pause or just didn't develop that side of me, so whoever I was intimate with, they could never feel a strong connection with me. "Lear jets, I ask myself: do I need love or success? They say the artist that truly suffers, his stuff is the best Cause his heart bleed on his sleeve: pain, pistols and sex""
5. Sara Tavares - Balance
"I found this song from J. Cole's track "Losing My Balance" since he had sampled it. Her angelic voice and soothing tone always felt like an audio massage on my soul. Something I go to every so often to calm my spirits and sing along freely as if the world stopped. I am truly saddened of her recent passing, but I am so happy to have discovered what she contributed to the world. Thank you Sara Tavares, and descane em paz."
