Updated: Sep 16, 2022

Following the release of JaVill'ss new single Water, we caught up with them to gain some insight into the influences that make up this eclectic sound. If you like their choices, be sure to check out the track.

1. (Kev): House of cards - Radiohead

This song has always inspired me, I listen to it when I’m happy and when I’m sad and it always has the same calming and uplifting effect. Everything about it from the guitar tone to the textures in the background to me it’s just perfect. When I listen to it, it almost feels like I’m transcending it’s an amazing amazing piece. I always think of it as a ‘brain massage’ it’s so calming and soothing and to me there is no other tune like it.

2. (Baz): Fake Plastic Trees - Radiohead

It inspired me in many ways as a teenager growing up . Mainly I learned about what it means to be an artist or songwriter . Being in touch with something other than yourself . Signals are transmitted seemingly and we receive them. In moments of self doubt growing up what I learned about the recording of fake plastic trees really helped me a lot . It reassured me that the music will always come if I sit and listen for it .

When I heard that thom cried during the recording of this song saying “it’s just so beautiful” this song turned into a different thing for me . I had always loved it as a kid growing up . My father would play the bends in the car when I was a child and so I knew the melody for many years before I could understand it’s depth . Thom yorke has a truly special ability to weave words and music producing a magic spell of sorts contained within the sonic realm . A medicine and a gift . I needed this medicine as a kid growing up through my teens and to this very day . The need perhaps is greater . Also the desire to take part in the bringing to life of songs and sharing them with others.

3. (Sean): So lonely - The police

This is a song and an album that begun my love for this style of music. At only 9 years old I remember forcing my father to get tickets to bring me. The police really had a huge part to play in me wanting to become a drummer. Seeing the crowd at the concert, seeing them singing back stings songs really stuck with me. It was the start of my want to be a musician

4. (James): Sober (Live) - Tool

The nature of the song is one of passion, of self examination and a search for deliverance from the guilt and shame of past transgressions. James Maynard Keenan sings with a raw passion unlike anything I have seen and the guitar, bass and drums follow suit, carrying the fiery vocals along with them in a tempestuous explication of difficult emotions.

This song inspires me because of its raw passion and emotion. It ignites something in me that I can only describe as the fire of my soul, and it inspires me to create music that might impact other people in the same way.

5. (Jonathan): Barbie Girl - Aqua

It made me feel like I wasn’t the only barbie girl trapped in a barbie world and that was inspiring.
