Following the release of his latest single 'Famous', we caught up with UK Pop-Punk artist WALWIN to find out more about what goes into his sound. If you like WALWIN's picks be sure to check out 'Famous' at the end of the article.
1. Like Roses - Splenetic
"I’m gonna kick things off with one of my current obsessions. I absolutely adore this band right now and they’ve got such a cool energy. The vocals have such a raw passion which is something I try to bring out in my songs."
2. Say Anything - Eloise
"The upfront and direct lyricism of this song is so flawless and again, is something I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from and tried to emulate in my music. I remember hearing it for the first time on PureVolume and being instantly hooked. I did go through a little spoken word phase purely because of the bridge in this song. Maybe it’ll come back one day…"
3. Marianas Trench - By Now
"This one’s particularly special because not only is the song 10/10 but the music video is a literal movie. I’ve always loved cinematic music videos, and I’m working my way up to that level and have dabbled in a little bit of it - but the way Marianas Trench have executed it here is phenomenal. I’m just a huge fan of this band all round - in particular the Masterpiece Theatre album because it’s literally a masterpiece. Any time I’m putting together vocal harmonies or choir parts - I always reference that album."
4. Wrestlemania 17 - My Way
"I’m bending the rules slightly, but we can’t talk about influential songs without mentioning My Way by Limp Bizkit - but specifically in the context of the Wrestlemania 17 promo video. There’s not a single wrestling fan that doesn’t have this video saved on a tab to come back to at random points throughout the year. It’s a perfect example of how music plays such an important role in all aspects of entertainment. I honestly don’t know if I’d even like/remember this song without it being attached to this storyline."
5. Darla Jade - Broken Armour
"I have to mention this song and this artist just because there’s such a fun story attached to it. I stumbled across it through a random Spotify playlist last summer and I had it on repeat for ages whilst I was travelling around Europe writing/recording all my recent songs. Cut to almost a year later and we got introduced to each other by a mutual friend and I didn’t make the connection until I got home and checked out her Spotify profile - at which point I majorly fanboyed. It’s such an amazing pop song, but it’s also attached to so many great memories that are always going to live with me. It sounds absolutely nothing like my song Thorns, but to me they’re forever linked because Broken Armour was on repeat whilst I was working on it and so many of my other songs."
