Nashville-based singer/songwriter Madison Steinbruck has just released her latest single, the mesmerizing indie track "Bad News." We sat down to chat with her about some of her biggest musical inspirations, and what songs she loves most.
MOON SONG - Phoebe Bridgers
I listened to this song so much when I was in lockdown in Australia. It sounds so lonely and I think that really resonates with me. To have someone in your life, but still feel really lonely and wonder how you could love them so much, while knowing it’s not reciprocated.
SAY YES - Elliot Smith
This is such a basic Elliott Smith song, but it’s so fucking good! It’s simple, but seems to encompass what it feels like to be in your 20s (for me at least). It’s just honest and I get that feeling of knowing yourself and the mundane parts of life and still choosing them everyday and asking someone else to choose them too.
Robbers - The 1975
The 1975 is my favorite band ever I just love them so much. To be able to put this really upbeat music to such introspective lyrics is so impressive. Robbers is one of my favorite songs to listen to while I’m driving. I could have named like fifteen The1975 songs though.
RATTLESNAKE - Jack Van Cleaf
A local Nashville artist! My college roommate introduced me to this song and I have loved it ever since I heard the Tiny Desk submission on YouTube years back. It’s so well written and feels very nostalgic and relatable, probably since we are the same age and went to the same college. Although I think anyone could find lines to relate to in this song.
GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY - Bob Dylan
This is my favorite song ever. I really have no words for this, just listen to it and you’ll know. My favorite lyric in the song is ,“I wonder if she remembers me at all, many times I’ve often prayed. In the darkness of my night, in the brightness of my day”.
"Bad News" is available across streaming platforms.
