Clarity Liao Finds The Joy In Emotional Contradiction in New Single 'Lose'

Clarity Liao’s ‘Lose’ is the kind of song that sounds like it should be breezy on first listen, bright guitars, upbeat drums and an instantly accessible pop feel, until you pay attention to what she’s actually singing about. Beneath that energy is a story of jealousy, insecurity and the slightly irrational thoughts that can take over when you’re afraid of losing someone you never really had.
That contrast is what makes the track work. Clarity originally imagined ‘Lose’ as a much softer piano ballad, but its eventual transformation into an upbeat pop track gives the song a completely different personality. There’s something almost playful about the production, even as Clarity admits to comparing herself with another girl and wrestling with the possibility that the relationship she wants simply isn’t going to happen.
Rather than over-dramatising those feelings, Clarity lets them exist in all their contradictions. She captures the excitement of wanting someone, the frustration of not being chosen and the jealousy that inevitably follows, before gradually reaching a more accepting place. It feels honest precisely because she doesn’t try to make herself look perfectly rational.
Musically, ‘Lose’ also gives a strong indication of the freedom Clarity is bringing into her solo work. Indie pop, R&B, bedroom pop and contemporary singer-songwriter influences all make an appearance, but none are allowed to define her completely. The result feels personal rather than overly calculated, with the production adapting to the emotion of the story.
Having already established herself as the principal songwriter for Navillera, Clarity now has the opportunity to put her own perspective front and centre. ‘Lose’ feels like a promising introduction to that next chapter: catchy without sacrificing substance, emotionally open without becoming overly sentimental, and ultimately a song about learning that sometimes letting go is the healthiest way forward.
