Few bands manage to wrap raw political urgency inside a package as danceable as Energy Whores. With their latest single ‘Hey Hey Hate’, the New York-based electro-punk-pop outfit, led by visionary songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Carrie Schoenfeld, deliver an explosive fusion of searing commentary and floor-filling energy.

Built on propulsive synths and jagged guitar lines, ‘Hey Hey Hate’ feels like a collision between protest folk and early 2000s electroclash — but with a distinctly modern bite. The track opens with a sense of simmering tension, escalating through pulsing arpeggios and processed vocals into a chorus that’s both anthemic and antagonistic. The beat never relents, echoing the persistent societal churn the song critiques. It’s protest music designed not for rallies, but for the clubs — a radical, stomping cry beneath the strobes.

The song takes aim at the global rise in division, xenophobia, and performative politics. Yet it does so without becoming didactic; Schoenfeld’s writing strikes a balance between urgency and artistry, her lyrics riding the rhythm with a sense of irony and dread. There’s no empty sloganeering here — instead, the track leans into its discomfort, offering no neat resolution but plenty of energy to keep the body moving and the brain whirring.

The production, shaped in the quiet solitude of late-night studio sessions, reflects both technical finesse and DIY grit. Schoenfeld’s classical background and filmic sensibility bleed through in the song’s structure — it’s cinematic, yet raw; chaotic, yet considered.

If ‘Hey Hey Hate’ is a sign of what’s to come from the group’s upcoming album Arsenal of Democracy, then Energy Whores are poised to deliver one of the most sonically adventurous and politically potent releases of the year. This is music that dares to disrupt — and it couldn’t be more vital right now.

“I am a sonic insurgent. A lyrical arsonist. I make music to expose what others try to bury, injustice, greed, hypocrisy, and the emotional fallout of a broken world. My project, Energy Whores, is where electronic beats meet art rock, folk, and raw protest,  a genre I call avant electro. Every track is a mirror held to society’s face, sometimes cracked, sometimes bloodied, always unfiltered.
I don’t write love songs. I write warning signs. My lyrics dissect the sickness of power, the isolation of modern life, and the emotional warzones we carry inside. I'm here to say what others are too afraid to say — and I’ll set it to a beat you can’t ignore. Music is my rebellion and my redemption. It’s not just entertainment — it’s a weapon and a witness.

I create for the misfits, the furious, the disillusioned , and the ones still standing after the world tried to erase them.”
