FENRA Reworks a Single Idea Into Something Expansive on 'CHICAGO'

There’s something quietly obsessive at the heart of FENRA’s 'CHICAGO' EP, a fixation not on reinvention, but on re-examination. Built entirely from the stems of a single idea first introduced on Delusional, the Portland-based producer’s latest release feels less like a follow-up and more like a deep, almost forensic study of form, memory, and movement.

Across its three iterations, 'CHICAGO' unfolds like shifting light across the same landscape. ‘CHICAGO AM’ opens the project in a widescreen haze, its cinematic sweep guided by airy synths and choral textures that feel suspended in time. It’s immersive but never overwhelming, a slow, deliberate breath before the pulse sharpens. By the time closer ‘CHICAGO REM’ drifts into view, that sense of place has dissolved entirely, replaced by something more abstract and dreamlike, where textures blur and structure softens at the edges.

At the centre sits ‘CHICAGO PM’, the EP’s most immediate and propulsive moment. Here, FENRA pulls rhythm firmly into the foreground, letting tightly coiled percussion drive the track with a restless sense of purpose. The looping drum patterns are meticulous, almost meditative in their repetition, building incrementally toward a hypnotic peak. Where the surrounding tracks search for space, ‘PM’ leans into motion, a study in tension and release that reveals just how far the DNA of the original track can be stretched without losing its identity.

What’s most compelling is the restraint. Despite drawing clear lineage from artists like Caribou, Four Tet, and Bonobo, FENRA avoids easy pastiche, instead carving out something more introspective and process-driven. There’s a quiet confidence in the way these tracks unfold, guided as much by negative space as by melody.

Rather than offering resolution, 'CHICAGO' lingers, a circular, evolving thought that resists a fixed endpoint. It’s less about arrival and more about immersion, inviting listeners to sit in with the details and lose themselves in the subtle shifts of a single, endlessly refracted idea.
