Australian dream-pop artist Geowulf returns with the announcement of her upcoming EP 'Twinkly Depression', set for release this October via Nettwerk, and shares its lead single 'Top Down'.
Blending shoegaze textures with classic dream-pop shimmer, 'Top Down' offers a radiant sonic palette that belies the weight of its subject matter. “It started as a bit of a devo moment,” says frontwoman Toma B. Kendrick, referring to the song’s roots in her personal struggle with postnatal anxiety. “The lyrics reflect an unraveling and a quiet cry for help. But Duncan [Mills] gave it this unexpected energy. It’s deeply sad, but you’d never know unless you really listened.”
The track sets the tone for Twinkly Depression, a collection of songs Kendrick describes as “happy-sad,” weaving emotional depth into breezy, nostalgic soundscapes. Inspired by artists like The Marías, Fleetwood Mac, Mazzy Star, and Cigarettes After Sex, the EP explores themes of love, healing, and personal struggle with a soft-focus glow.
“I wasn’t in the best headspace when I started writing this EP,” Kendrick explains. “But I didn’t want it to feel heavy. I wanted something to lift me up. There’s a bittersweetness in every track — a kind of beautiful melancholy.”
