Interview - Ava Delaney

The multi-faceted music artist Ava Delaney returns with her brand-new album 'everything' - an imaginative and expansive collection of songs. With every release, she reveals the sincerity and sensitivity found in her songs, driven by her creative exploration of new sounds and desire to establish a stronger connection with her audience.

We sat down with Ava Delaney to discuss her music and much more. Here is what she had to say:

Hey Ava Delaney, welcome to FLEX! How are you?

I am amazing!!! Stoked to be here and grateful to be chatting with you guys.

Congratulations on your brand-new album 'everything' - what inspired this particular project?

Thank you! This project is an extension of the lessons I’ve learned over the past few years, navigating heartbreak, yearning, curiosity, seeking a spiritual connection, and going on the inward journey to discover the vast world of magic that we all have access to. A world where our intentions and prayers become our compass. Where the elements surround and support us. Where our intuition guides every step. Where we remember who we truly are, and we grow our wings and fly into the sky of the great unknown.

And do you have to be in a certain mood to write?

No, in fact, I love to write from all moods. All feelings are welcome in my work. My sadness, my joy, my anger, my freedom, my serenity, my longing. Writing is the tool that helps me understand my subconscious and navigate the feelings and stories under the surface.

How was the recording and writing process?

Most of the records I wrote on my own, either on the ukulele or piano, and brought to the studio to dive into the world of sounds with my producer Brian Kennedy. Brian’s ear and absolute magic touch on the keyboard helped me expand the sonic world beyond any limits I perceived. We had so much fun playing and exploring with different synths and midi sounds. It’s a blessing to create in a time when any instrument is accessible through the internet. Tribal drums, serene flutes, and so much more are accessible at our fingertips. I wanted this album to sound like my inner world does. Swirling, whirling, wild, wide, free, full of feeling!!

For viewers who don't know Ava Delaney, how would you describe your sound?

My sound is ever-evolving. My voice is my instrument first and foremost, I love playing with melodies and expansive harmony. I feel my music is soulful, magical, ethereal, yet also deep, potent, and emotional. Come find out for yourself!!!

And what are some of those activities that you engage yourself in when you aren't writing or recording in the studio?

I am most at home in nature. Especially in the ocean to a river. Barefoot in the mountains, Singing and dancing and celebrating life with the people I love. I am also an actress! Musical theatre was my first love before writing ever came into the picture.  I love the medium for telling illuminating stories that connect and reflect our humanness to each other. I also love art museums! My favourite Painters inspire me so much. Frida Kahlo, Georgia Okeefe, Matisse, Zoe Rose Schwartz.
