We sat down with actor, fashionista, vlogger and last but not least addictive music creator Bly Jay after her stellar release Trees to get to know a little more about what makes the half-Brazilian and half-American tick.
If you were to describe your music to a stranger, what would you say?
I’d describe my sound as indie-pop or alt-pop and I put it in the same genre as acts like Billie Eilish, Halsey, Marina, and Mazzy Star. Those are the artists I am most frequently compared to.
What is the message, if any, that you would like to get across with your sound?
It varies from song to song, I guess the main thing I look for when writing my music is some type of connection with my audience.
If your music was a colour, what would it be and why?
Jade green. I don’t have synesthesia, but if anybody out there does I’d love to hear about what color experiences you have listening to the music.
What artist has influenced your songwriting the most?
Lana de Rey, Fiona Apple, and Alanis Morissette. They all have different elements that I have been influenced by but they are all great lyricists – able to bring very powerful female voices to their music.
Where would be your dream place to play a gig?
I’m from Los Angeles and based here, so I guess my favorite hometown venue would be the Troubadour. It's really intimate but you can have a nice turnout there and it has such an incredible history. So that’s definitely a goal for the near future.
If you could write a song with anyone, alive or not, who would it be?
I’d like to write a song with all kinds of artists but I guess who I would love to produce a record with would be Pharrell. I just think everything he touches, no matter the genre, is amazing.
What can we expect from you creatively in the next year?
I will continue to release more singles – I have something in the works right now and I have just started a youtube channel blogging my life as an indie musician.
