James White & The Wild Fire have unveiled their latest single, The Ballad of Jimmy Blanco, released on 29th May, offering another compelling preview of their forthcoming EP, How To Replace Anxiety With A Broken Heart, due for release on 19th June.

Formed in 2019, the band have steadily carved out a distinctive space where psychedelic folk rock intersects with traditional American roots music. Their sound combines atmospheric, expansive textures with the structural precision of bluegrass and Americana, all anchored by the direct and emotionally candid songwriting of band leader James White.

Even before its official release, How To Replace Anxiety With A Broken Heart is already making waves, reaching Number 1 in Rock and Number 2 in Country on Amazon Music’s pre-order charts. The achievement signals strong anticipation for the band's return following a nearly three-year hiatus.

New single The Ballad of Jimmy Blanco perfectly encapsulates the group's evolving sound, blending country, bluegrass and Americana instrumentation with White’s playful songwriting style and tongue-in-cheek lyricism. Driven by acoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle, double bass and tightly shuffling drums, the track builds with infectious energy and emotional bite. As it unfolds, a flourishing instrumental passage emerges around the 2:40 mark, with swirling modulations introducing a psychedelic flair that elevates the song beyond its roots foundations.

Discussing the track, White said:

"The Ballad of Jimmy Blanco is my personal favourite on the EP. It was written a year or so after failing to move on from a bad breakup – the one Bonfire was written about. I basically just thought, 'If one of my mates were in this position, what would you be saying to them?', hence the use of an alter ego in the title.

Personally, I think it is the showcasing of each member's individual talents that makes the song pop. From Brooke's bass solo, Mike's two violin solos, Joe's harmonies and even my solo. I also really, really love the psychedelic build-up before the last chorus!"

The release follows a period of notable early success for the band. James White & The Wild Fire have secured multiple Number 1 positions on Amazon UK's download charts, including three in Country and two in Folk. Their debut EP, Making Tracks, and the follow-up live release, Live at Saffron Hall, recorded during a sold-out hometown performance, established them as both an accomplished studio outfit and a captivating live act.

Their March 2023 cover of the traditional bluegrass standard Little Maggie marked the band's final release before stepping away from the spotlight. Following a sold-out tour-closing performance in October 2023, the group entered a period of reflection and reinvention.

Since then, the project has evolved into what White describes as a "new phase" - one that is more intentional, reflective and potentially finite. The band have indicated that How To Replace Anxiety With A Broken Heart could represent their final body of work, lending additional weight to a collection that explores themes of heartbreak, anger, confusion and emotional recovery.

Musically, the EP sees the band pushing further into psychedelic territory while remaining firmly rooted in the acoustic traditions that have defined their identity. Previous single Bonfire exemplified this approach, beginning with understated intimacy before erupting into a powerful emotional crescendo.

White's musical journey extends well beyond the band itself. Prior to forming James White & The Wild Fire, he completed two full European tours as a solo artist, with a third tour ultimately interrupted and cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic.

With The Ballad of Jimmy Blanco, James White & The Wild Fire continue to balance emotional honesty with increasingly adventurous sonic ambition. As the release of How To Replace Anxiety With A Broken Heart approaches, the single stands as both a celebration of the band's collective musicianship and a poignant chapter in what may be the final stage of their story.
