Emerging Brighton singer-songwriter Jimmy Herrity returns with his poignant and hard hitting new single, ‘Lost Boys’. A delicate reflection on loss, grief, and the relentless passage of time, the track highlights Herrity’s unique talent for raw, emotionally charged storytelling, delivered with a vulnerable sincerity.

The song is built around a tender soundscape of fingerpicked electric guitar, gentle acoustic strums, and Jimmy’s fragile, intimate vocals. As it progresses, ‘Lost Boys’ gradually swells into an atmospheric crescendo, layered with emotion and introspection, offering a hauntingly beautiful close. Thematically, the track explores the inevitability of time slipping away and the profound weight of personal loss, both of loved ones and missed opportunities.

Versions of ‘Lost Boys’ have existed for years, but the song has evolved, deepened by several personal tragedies in Herrity’s life. These include the end of a five-year relationship, the loss of his brother to suicide, and the recent passing of a close friend, James Macnish. In a bittersweet tribute, Herrity and his guitarist performed the song at Macnish’s funeral, adding a poignant layer of meaning to an already emotionally charged piece.

Herrity reflects: “‘Lost Boys’ is about that gnawing feeling of wishing you’d done more with your time, and yearning for something to save you. It’s a reflection on self-doubt, with verses that cascade through uncertainty and a pre-chorus that paints romantic, wintry imagery of better days to come. The chorus—‘Well, I haven’t seen much of the sea this summer’—is an analogy for feeling like time is slipping away.”

Originally titled ‘The Lost Boy’, Herrity renamed the track to reflect the multiple losses he’s endured, including the deaths of his brother and close friends. As Herrity explains, “We played ‘Lost Boys’ at James’ funeral, which added even more context to the song. It’s been around for a while and just keeps taking on more meaning. Which is funny, because it was already pretty fucking sad.”

The single’s cover art holds deep personal significance: a black-and-white photo of Jimmy and his late brother at a Radiohead concert in Reykjavik. The original shot, taken during a rare, joyful moment, has been stripped of its colour to underscore the loss and grief that underpin ‘Lost Boys’.

Jimmy has already earned comparisons to acts like The National, Elliott Smith, Nick Drake, and Ben Gibbard, and now fresh off performances at the Isle of Wight Festival and Washed Out, Herrity is gearing up for his biggest headline shows yet, set for December 2024.
