Dr Wippit: From Chicago Basements to Colorado Peaks, and Still Not Done

An Authentic & Refreshing Listening Experience

There is a particular kind of artist who never quite fits the timeline the music industry expects: No viral moment, no industry co-sign, no carefully managed trajectory. Just decades of playing, writing, touring, living, and making music because it is simply what they do. Dr Wippit is that kind of artist, and ‘Yup’, his new single, sounds exactly like someone who has made peace with that and is glad they did.

Originally from Chicago, Dr Wippit grew up with a guitar in his hands and a restless musical curiosity that has never really left him. He was active in school band and theatre before graduating to the city’s live circuit, where his hard rock band Chronic Jaywalker found real traction in the 1990s, picking up local airplay and a following that came out to shows. Later, The Kenilworth Project arrived, swapping out hard rock for a looser, more eclectic mix of ska and hip-hop. The throughline across all of it was the same: Dr Wippit makes music that sounds like himself, not like whatever is currently doing well.

He speaks openly about watching contemporaries chase trends and about the satisfaction of not having done that. “There’s a glut of music coming out that sounds very much the same,” he has said, “and many newer musicians feel they need to create similar sounding music.” His own work has always pushed in the opposite direction.

Now living in Golden, Colorado, Dr Wippit spends time between writing sessions hiking the mountains with his dogs, travelling, and doing what he has always done: making music that feels good to play. ‘Yup’ was born from a happy accident in FL Studio, a MIDI drum beat repurposed into a bass groove that grew into something with real swagger. The track is a statement of arrival as much as anything else, an artist telling you plainly that he knows who he is and where he is headed.

With new releases already confirmed and live shows in the pipeline, Dr Wippit is not winding down. He is, in his own words, “exactly where he wants to be.” And from the sound of ‘Yup’, that comes across clearly.
