Pushing on from the release of their comeback just a short while ago, Monoculture are back with their politically-conscious short film ‘Beyond Material’. Bringing their creative tendencies to the silver screen, the short film makes a rallying cry for the unification of workers, minorities and other oppressed groups.

In the wake of the Presidential Election, America has once again found itself directly in the limelight for world politics. Adding their ten cents to the mixture sees Chicago psyche-jazz outfit Monoculture make their short film debut with ‘Beyond Material’. Following on from the release of ‘I’ll Do You One Better’ earlier in the year, the new film sees them team up with award-winning filmmaker Merawi Gerima whilst showcasing two further new recordings ‘Open’ and the titular ‘Beyond Material’.

Commenting about the meaning behind the work, the band comment, “The film is about workers who experience the workplace as a new plantation. The commentary here is that, under our current system, we ostensibly have freedom, but in actuality, we are wage slaves who must work to survive. Even then, living is often meagre, even if the work is hard. I call the film ‘Beyond Material’ because I recognize that the fight for a better world is more than just a material struggle, there's also an ideological component to that struggle, and this film humbly joins that struggle.”
