Rumour Den put a life under the microscope on new single ‘Chapter & Verse’

Rumour Den step into a more immediate, guitar-led space on ‘Chapter & Verse’, but the brighter tempo does little to soften the self-examination at its centre. Beneath the driving alt-rock arrangement is a song about plans abandoned, confidence eroded and the uncomfortable moment when circumstance can no longer take all of the blame.

The idea begins simply, with an unfinished book, then gradually widens into something much more personal. Lost ambition, failed relationships and a life that has drifted away from its imagined version all feed into the song’s central metaphor: whether we follow the plan or not, the pages keep turning.

AJ Gilmore’s lyrics gives the track its weight, approach regret almost from a distance, as though the narrator is examining his own life as somebody else might. That perspective makes the questions sharper, particularly when the song begins to ask how much of disappointment is bad luck and how much comes from the choices we repeatedly avoid making.

While Steve Simms’ arrangement understands when to stay out of the way. Real guitars, bass and live drums bring a more physical energy than some of their darker recent material, but melody remains the priority. The chorus arrives with enough lift to make ‘Chapter & Verse’ one of their more accessible songs without undermining the unease beneath it.

As another glimpse of forthcoming album 'Relapse', ‘Chapter & Verse’ shows a different side of their conventional approach. It's faster, more open and immediately memorable, but still carries the same interest in disappointment, responsibility and lives that don't unfold according to expectation.

Sharp, melodic and quietly uncomfortable, it finds Rumour Den proving that stepping towards the light doesn't necessarily mean leaving the shadows behind.
