If you’re a fan of raw, riff-driven rock that packs energy, grit, and a bit of storytelling, you’ll want to crank up Soundrun’s latest single “Back in my hood.” The Finnish trio have been steadily making a name for themselves over the past few years with their dynamic live sound and DIY spirit. Now, with this new track, they’ve taken things up a notch and delivered something that feels bold, confident, and undeniably fun.
“Back in my hood” kicks off with a thick guitar riff that instantly grabs your attention. It’s not overproduced or polished to perfection, and that’s exactly what makes it so effective. The track has a real live-band feel, with drummer Jouni Juntunen and bassist Timo Korpela locking into a groove that drives the whole thing forward. Vocalist and guitarist Hannu Jääskeläinen brings a gritty edge to the vocals, which sit perfectly on top of the track’s chugging rhythm and tight arrangement.
There’s also a bit of a journey behind this one. The song was originally born out of a tuning experiment on acoustic guitar, where the A string was tuned down to G. That sparked a working title (“A to G”), and from there, the band started building out the song during rehearsals. While the instrumental came together fairly quickly, the lyrics took some time to get just right. And it shows. There’s a strong narrative running through the track – about going out into the world, taking your hits, learning from them, and coming home changed but not defeated.
Lines like “Now I'm back from the sea / And I've got some new tricks up my sleeve” give the song a sense of resilience and adventure. It’s part hometown anthem, part post-journey reflection, and it works because it feels real. There’s no forced messaging here. It’s just a rock band telling their story with heart and a whole lot of energy.
Soundrun have always focused on making music that’s fun to play live, and “Back in my hood” feels like a perfect example of that. It has groove, grit, and enough bite to get a crowd moving. With a debut album on the way, this single feels like a strong sign of what’s coming next. If this is your first time hearing Soundrun, it won’t be the last. Keep them on your radar!
