For the Donna James project VelumVelvet, 'Women's Burden' reaches all the way back to a poem she wrote in 2011, carrying the emotional weight of what she calls her “years of hush” and transforming that silence into something vivid, exposed and ultimately freeing.

Built around piano, strings and her shimmering voice, ‘Woman’s Burden’ thrives on contrast. There's tension in the restraint of the arrangement, but also a growing sense of movement, as though the song itself is pushing against the walls that once contained it.

Recorded at home, away from the distance of a polished studio environment, her performance feels close and unguarded. And her commitment to emotion over perfection becomes one of the song’s greatest strengths. You can hear the importance of the story in the way it's delivered, and that immediacy makes the eventual sense of release hit even harder.

She imagines her music as a “House of Emotional Rooms”, with each release opening into a different inner space. ‘Woman’s Burden’ becomes the Release Room; the point where repression finally gives way to expression, and where Donna James’ personal history begins turning into the artistic world of VelumVelvet.

It's an ambitious concept, but it works because the emotion underneath it is so direct.

There are flashes of the fearlessness associated with Billie Eilish and David Bowie in her willingness to sound vulnerable and strange, but ‘Woman’s Burden’ ultimately feels intensely individual.

Bold, intimate and deeply cathartic, ‘Woman’s Burden’ turns fifteen years of buried emotion into a genuine artistic breakthrough. VelumVelvet is no longer waiting behind the door; she has opened it.
