Following an acclaimed string of singles released since their 2023 self-titled debut album, retro-soul outfit Bonneville are gearing up to release their latest single ‘Over Breakin’. The release marks the sixth to be released from their forthcoming sophomore studio album as they aim to cement themselves as one of the most unique creative outlets the American South has to offer.
Kicking into the airwaves with a notable drum groove, it's not long before the whirling organ takes hold of the single for the lead vocal to slide its way forward. ‘Over Breakin’ demonstrates a sublime approach to music-making as the soundscape becomes punctuated with a soulful underbelly. Landing at the crossroads of RnB, soul and funk, the single also pays homage to the flavours of gospel and Motown, creating a colourful creative collage. Lyrically, the single deals with the inner demons of heartbreak and regret whilst hammering home a sense of encouragement and empathy.
Speaking about the single, co-writer and lead vocalist explains, “I was in the middle of a breakup and Jeff saw what I was going through while processing the shame and guilt of the way I conducted myself in the relationship. I think he wrote it to pick me up and get me back in the game of life,” with bandmate Jeff Hayashi adding “I wanted to convey empathy and encouragement. This is one of our brighter, happier, and uplifting tracks on ‘Flying Machine.’ It’s more in the vein of overcoming strife rather than being mired in it. I hope listeners, especially those going through any kind of loss, find it helpful in transitioning out of sadness and into the light.”
