Dan Webb channels change into motion on new single ‘Things Rise And Fall’

Dan Webb has spent much of his career moving freely between jazz, rock and electronic music, but ‘Things Rise And Fall’ feels especially focused in the way those influences come together. Featuring bassist Logan Kane, the new single from his forthcoming album 'Lion Dance' is intricate without becoming inaccessible, using movement and repetition to explore a broader idea of impermanence.

Inspired by Taoist philosophy, the track reflects on the natural cycle of growth, decline and return. But instead of approaching that subject with heaviness, he gives it a fluid, almost restless energy. The arrangement is constantly shifting, with keyboards, guitar and Kane’s bass performance working around one another in a way that feels both tightly constructed and instinctive.

There's obvious technical ability on display here, but the track never feels like a showcase for virtuosity alone. Instead, the playing serves the wider idea, allowing the music to rise, contract and reshape itself as the track develops.

The single also reflects the wider period of change behind 'Lion Dance'. Written after the artist relocated from Melbourne to Singapore, the album grew out of unfamiliar surroundings, travel across Southeast Asia and a growing engagement with ideas around transformation and renewal. ‘Things Rise And Fall’ distils much of that perspective into one of the record’s more direct statements.

For an artist known for musical curiosity, the track feels less concerned with proving how many directions he can move in and more interested in making those directions feel connected.

Detailed, dynamic and thoughtfully composed, ‘Things Rise And Fall’ is a strong introduction to the philosophical core of 'Lion Dance', and another example of Dan Webb finding clarity within complexity.
