VPC Ensemble turn repetition into a cosmic meditation on debut album 'Life Is a Strange Loop'

There are albums that invite close listening, and then there are albums that seem designed to alter the way you listen altogether. And on their debut collection 'Life Is a Strange Loop', New York collective VPC Ensemble take the latter route by building a continuous 32-minute journey that treats repetition as a way of exploring consciousness, memory and the strange cycles that shape human experience.

Led by Dash Lunde, the record unfolds through electric guitar, samplers, flutes, viola, drums and wordless vocals, creating a sound that sits somewhere between ambient music, spiritual jazz and psychedelic rock. There are clear traces of Alice Coltrane, Fripp & Eno and the more weightless side of David Gilmour’s guitar playing, but the ensemble use those reference points to create something more fluid and less conventionally structured.

Instead of presenting a series of isolated compositions, 'Life Is a Strange Loop' moves as one uninterrupted piece, with motifs appearing, dissolving and returning in altered forms. The effect is subtle, but over time it becomes increasingly immersive.

Inspired by Douglas Hofstadter’s writing on self-referential consciousness, Lunde uses looping forms as a metaphor for the way identity seems to fold back on itself. That perspective was then deepened by new parenthood, where holding his son prompted reflections on being held in the same way by his own parents and on how that cycle would continue forward.

Despite the conceptual weight, the music never feels academic. The improvisational nature of the performances keeps everything human and slightly unpredictable, while the spacious production allows each instrument to emerge and recede without disrupting the larger whole.

There's also a distinctly physical quality to the project. VPC Ensemble encourage us to move, meditate and engage with the music as something embodied, an approach that extends naturally into their immersive live performances.

Expansive, patient and quietly transportive, 'Life Is a Strange Loop' is a convincing debut collection from VPC Ensemble, and one that finds real beauty in the idea that repetition and change are part of the same continuous motion.
