Dublin’s Runner release the vibrant debut single, ‘Distance’.
Working alongside producer Dan Doherty (Mazzy Star, Fontaines DC, Jesus and The Mary Chain), the band weave together a rich tapestry of melodies and introspective lyricism, layered across immersive, guitar-led soundscapes. Drawing inspiration from 70s rock icons like Rush and Pink Floyd, while also citing Radiohead and Nirvana among their influences, Runner capture a unique blend of timeless rock and modern alternative atmospheres.
Blending nostalgic indie-rock sensibilities with a raw post-punk edge, ‘Distance’ is a striking showcase of the band’s sound: effortless and organic, yet meticulously formed. The song grows patiently through its verses as guitars, bass and drums are introduced under emotive, understated vocals, before bursting into a bold chord change. The chorus lifts the track into life with grunge-toned guitars and a deceptively catchy vocal melody that lingers long after the first listen.
As comparable to Fontaines DC as it is to Joy Division and Oasis, the single thrives on its distinct 90s influence, sharpened by a contemporary, atmospheric edge.
Speaking about the single, the band shared: “Recording this song was tough for us as a group as a lot of unneeded stress in our daily lives pushed the release out but we are very excited to show our other avenues of music that we can tap into, Distance is leaning more to our alternative and shoegazey sound which we want to show our listeners. Very excited for people to hear us getting a little more experimental.”
Runner are proving themselves to be one of Ireland’s most exciting emerging acts. ‘Distance’ cements that reputation, pushing their sound into bold indie-rock territory.
