ellipse debuts with mesmerising new track, ‘Poison’ today; representing a new beginning and courageously vulnerable moment for the artist.
Inspired by a month she spent recording music with the indigenous tribes of the Panamanian jungle, ellipse was instantly inspired by the unapologetic truths that seamlessly peeked through their playful rhythms and textures. ‘Poison’ arose from this sentiment, as she realised that “no matter how beautiful your escape destination is, the darkness actually comes from within, and this song is inspired by that revelation.”
ellipse has always been attuned to sound - whether they be from nature, the lush instruments of cultures around the world, or domains of synthetic creations. She designs her productions as intricate sonic landscapes: combining organic, textural elements with meticulous synth work. After discovering the rave scene as a young teenager, ellipse immediately fell in love with the endless possibilities of audio texture. She quickly became involved as a vocalist, DJ, and later, producer. ellipse represents the artist’s bold new venture into unfamiliar terrain, with an upcoming album and striking visuals to follow the release of her debut single.
As a trailblazer in the electronic scene since the 90s, then-ill-esha had seen paramount success as a touring artist – with several releases under her belt (including a track on a Ninja Tune ambient compilation alongside Sigur Ros and Ryuichi Sakamoto), she also played Coachella, Shambhala and Lightning in a Bottle, and was featured on Boiler Room in 2017. Despite all this, ellipse recognised that artistry is multi-faceted – and so is she. After years of very successfully making beats and drops, she boldly sheds her past and moves towards the pop genre. She shares, “the dance floor didn’t seem quite the right place to share the more intimate, dark-pop musings growing in my core.” And so enters ellipse, representing a fresh slate for the artist, a blank canvas to map the musings of her new sonic realm.
Flash forward to now, and ellipse has been working to transform into her new, true self – bringing it back to basics with a minimal sound, and raw vocals that hum within a sea of delicate textures and deep outlines. On the single, ellipse shares, “we are always thirsting for the next level, the greener grass, a ‘better place’ than we’re in. Sometimes you can’t escape that darkness when you realise it’s actually coming from inside. It’s only when we embrace and forgive our shadow self that we can move towards the light.”
ellipse announces ‘Poison’ is just the first of her upcoming debut album, and the project will be told in three chapters – past, present and future. With ‘Poison’, ellipse begins a burgeoning story of a lonely soul finding warmth and presence in her journey, embracing all that comes within both light and shadow.
