There’s a certain kind of stillness that arrives before dawn, when the world hasn’t quite decided to wake up yet, and FENRA’s debut single, “COFFEE”, seems to live there permanently. The Portland-based producer, known offstage as B Laws, introduces himself not with a shout but a sigh, weaving together organic textures and electronic subtleties that feel both immediate and eternal.
Premiered via Magnetic Magazine and mastered by Aneek Thapar (Rival Consoles, Max Cooper), “COFFEE” captures the cinematic restraint of artists like Floating Points or Bonobo, yet its emotional centre is unmistakably FENRA’s own. A hammered dulcimer flutters gently over a haze of detuned pads, while pitched-down vocals murmur like half-remembered dreams. Each sound seems to arrive from another room, distant, familiar, and quietly comforting.
There’s an intimacy to the production that betrays its craft. Every element feels carefully placed, yet never sterile. You can hear the ghosts of FENRA’s musical past, the hymns sung with his grandmother, the years touring with bands across continents, distilled into something patient and reflective. The result is a track that invites the listener not to move, but to breathe.
As a preview of his upcoming debut EP Delusional, due 28 November via 6x Records, “COFFEE” feels like the moment light first seeps through the blinds, tender, unhurried, and quietly transformative.
