Just Trey has a modern day feeling of Drake and Justin Bieber all moulded into one. The rising artist and producer has been making his mark and finding his sound over the past few years, and has landed on his new EP 'Since You've Been Away' which is 6 tracks of pure smooth pop infused pleasure.
Lead single 'Love To Give' perfectly encapsulates Just Trey, and we caught up with the multitalented singer songwriter to speak all about it and his plans this year exclusively for FLEX!
Hey Just Trey, welcome to FLEX How are you?
I’m great! I’m excited to be talking to FLEX!
Could you describe your sound & style for any of our readers who may not have heard of you before?
I would describe my sound as ambient, chillwave, and euphoric. My style is definitely smooth, jaded, and mysterious. I try to shift perspectives and speak introspectively in my music. I make beats to get you to feel something and write lyrics that make you think!

When I was in the Navy, I sang in the USNA Men’s Glee Club. During my last semester I was a “Skiv” and I sang acapella doo-wop music.
Please tell us all about your new EP and lead single 'Love To Give'!
Since You’ve Been Away is a pandemic love EP. We all spent a lot of time on our own the last few years, and it was especially hard to a long distance relationship on top of everything else going on in the pandemic world. These songs are dramatisations of my feelings going through that time, all with a different spin on the ups and downs of love. Love To Give is a perfect lead for this project because I think it describes how it feels to be committed and in love, but having the ambition to be more than what you are. I’m still learning this, but I have to take time to myself to build myself into the person I aspire to be. That time is a sacrifice that not only I have to make; your partner is in this with you and feels the strain of not always being able to be around. I still have “things to prove” and huge goals to accomplish, but do not feel like I don’t have love to give. I am just chasing my dreams!
Please tell us a bit about your creative process when it comes to songwriting?
I always say that I’m a producer first, so a great beat is essential for me. When I connect with the beat, the lyrics come naturally. From there, I can derive themes, meaning, and nuance. I am constantly splitting syllables and editing the way things are written or said to best fit my aesthetic as a writer and a performer. I write intricate syncopations and nuances in my lyrics to further captivate my listeners.
Who or what influences your sound?
I would say the biggest influences on my sound are Drake, Majid Jordan, and Jaden Smith. I also love vaporwave, chillwave, and other euphoric, night-time driving style sounds.
& Lastly, what can fans expect from Just Trey next?
Expect a deluxe album version of Since You’ve Been Away with some more cool sounds! Also stay tuned for some music videos and NFTs this year!
