The most successful experimental records are rarely the ones that constantly remind you how experimental they are, and 'The Pumphouse of Broken Dreams' understands that. Across their new LP, Legends of the Seven Golden Vampires remain adventurous, but the experimentation is now embedded more naturally into the songs.

Instead of every stylistic shift demanding attention, the changes happen almost imperceptibly. A psychedelic guitar texture drifts into electronic ambience. A dream-pop melody acquires a darker trip-hop pulse. A synth line quietly alters the entire emotional direction of a track. It's a subtlety that marks a real development in their direction to date.

The band's debut LP established their appetite for unlikely combinations, but this follow-up feels much more confident in allowing those influences to coexist without competing.

Ilse Van Der Linden's melodic vocals provides a kind of emotional continuity that allows the production to become even stranger around her. Even when the arrangements shift, the record still feels grounded. and that balance is especially important across a project influenced by artists as different as Radiohead, Portishead, Orbital and Cyndi Lauper.

The broader sound is difficult to reduce to one label, which is precisely the appeal behind it. Dream-pop is probably the easiest starting point, but it doesn't explain the grit. Psychedelia captures the colour, but not the electronic precision. Alternative rock describes some of the weight, but not the spectral quality. And perhaps that ambiguity is the point here.

The band have become more coherent without becoming easier to categorise, and that's never an easy balance to strike.

'The Pumphouse of Broken Dreams' is an album about control as much as invention. The band know when to push, when to hold back, and most importantly, they now know how to make very different ideas feel like parts of the same emotional language.
