The Weekend Run Club is a queer majority indie band from Chicago, Illinois. Their most recent album, Liminal Space Race, draws from a variety of genres including rock, alternative, power pop, punk, and emo, and focuses on identity, coming of age, and all things interpersonal. The five-piece composes music for the introverted party jammers, the reflective philosophers, and everyone in between, with an emphasis on danceable rhythms, guitar licks, and sensitive, self-revealing lyrics.

The band has always been influenced by a wide variety of genres, and this record doesn't change that. They tried to incorporate some of the lovely, indie guitars that defined their early sound while working towards a more rock feel. Liminal Space Race, reflects their fear of making this record, but instead of concentrating on that worry, the group wrote nine songs on uncertainty and fear in many aspects of life.

Liminal Space Race, was written with the same sense of urgency as the album’s underlying themes. In early 2022, the Weekend Run Club had a major lineup change, with Mitchell taking on lead songwriter responsibilities and a new compositional framework. In the beginning, Mitchell and Ryan, the surviving members, found this identity shift to be startling. The band was highly motivated to release something fresh to redefine their sound because of the time lost during the epidemic and the time it took to get all of the new members on board. Mitchell's fresh ideas received tremendous backing from the new band members, who also gave the new tunes an unmatched confidence and flare.

The album is a collection of moods with a central theme that encourages one to feel and accept all feelings, no matter how difficult they may be. Liminal Space Race, features a lot of lively, cheerful themes interspersed with a few pensive, quiet passages. This offering genuinely has something to offer everyone. A wide range of styles, including dance rock, alternative, power pop, pop rock, indie, rock, and pop pop, are combined in Liminal Space Race. The production of the songs includes vocals, guitar, bass, percussion, and synths, resulting in amazing and evocative earworms.

“Coming of age is an animal experience that humans share on a global scale. ‘Liminal Space Race’ addresses the nebulous, yet frenetic paradigm shifts of growing up. At the end of the tunnel of adolescence and early adulthood is an unavoidable, rueful acceptance: a fleeting truth which spares no one,  especially the queer people of yesterday, today, and tomorrow: We never really stop coming out,” The Weekend Run Club comments on the release.
