Clarity Liao Turns Homework into Heartfelt Pop on ‘Like I Do’

Sometimes the best songs come from the most unexpected places, and that’s exactly the story behind Clarity Liao’s latest single, ‘Like I Do’. Originally written as an English assignment, the track evolved into a fully produced studio release that captures the ache of unrequited love through the striking metaphor of wandering endlessly through a desert. It’s intimate, it’s honest, and it puts Clarity’s delicate yet commanding vocals front and centre, letting her emotional nuance and lyrical maturity take the spotlight.

“‘Like I Do’ was a song written just as homework given from my English tutor at first. The song really brought out my emotions from the current situation I was in at the time, also exploring a genre I’ve been liking but never really got to pursue, so I decided to take it to the studio. This song has so far been one of my favourite tracks to sing and listen to, also being one of the best expressed in my lyrics.”

Clarity’s journey is impressive: she started composing at just seven, mastering piano and guitar before stepping into the spotlight with the award-winning band Navillera. Their debut single Too Young won the Yamaha National Best Popular Music Award in 2024, followed by I Need You taking first place in the 2025 YMS National Composers competition. Her solo work, including her debut Hurt My Heart at age 12, already hinted at her rare combination of technical skill and emotional depth.

Drawing from inspirations ranging from Olivia Rodrigo and Bruno Mars to Celine Dion and Frankie Valli, Clarity blends indie pop, R&B, bedroom pop, and modern doo-wop into something that feels both contemporary and timeless. ‘Like I Do’ offers a tantalising preview of her upcoming EP, Dear…, which promises intimate storytelling and polished pop production exploring love, jealousy, and loss.
